I keep catching myself feeling overwhelmed a lot recently. It’s not surprising, given that I’m involved in the day-to-day running of multiple businesses, I’m launching a new one in January 2018, I want to keep myself in the loop when it comes to industry news, business news, client feedbacks, and just like anyone, I need to deal with personal and family matters. Even organising some downtime can sometimes seem like such a major hassle that I can’t be bothered.
The more overwhelmed I feel, the less productive I am.
I decided to try meditation. First, I went on Youtube but I found most of those guided meditations too woo-woo for me.
Then I came across Headspace. It’s all about meditation and mindfulness, made super simple.
As they claim: “The techniques used within the Headspace® app have been refined and developed over many centuries. Their aim is to cultivate awareness and compassion so we can better understand both the mind and the world around us. The additional health benefits that occur with regular meditation are helpful byproducts.”
When downloading the app, you’ll find tons of different themed meditations, both short and longer ones, guided and unguided, you can track your journey, set reminders etc.
Tip: allow push notifications. They are very discreet, and very thought-provoking.
This is the message I got from Headspace on the last day of 2017:
Traditions may bind us, cultures alienate us, language and words divide us. But in silence, we are united.
Now, my goal as a language coach is of course to not let cultures alienate us, and to not let language and words divide us, in fact, it’s the opposite, but while I’m on this mission, I’ll be using Headspace on a daily basis.
Do you meditate regularly? If so, what specific difference has it made in your life? If not, why not? Let me know in the comments below.
Wishing you a fantastic new year.
