The other day, I was interviewed by business coach and entrepreneur Orsi Beata Nagy. We had a pleasent conversation in Hungarian, about success.
How do you prepare for an interview on success? – I asked myself.
I knew that Orsi would ask questions about my life and my journey. I didn’t know what those questions would be. But I figured that I do know my life better than anyone else, so I decided to just enjoy the interview and go with the flow, without any preparation.
But still, it was an interview on ‘Success’. I thought that I should at least come up with some kind of definition on success.
Now, that proved to be a bit of a challenge.
What is success? How do I define success? How do you define success? Is there a difference between success and happiness? Can success be measured? How do different cultures think about success? Do I consider myself to be successful? Does wealth correlate with success?
Just some of the questions that are still on my mind, most of them unanswered.
I have tonnes of books on personal development, so I decided to have a look around and see if there are any ideas that I can relate to.
I settled with a definition by the amazing Maya Angelou that I shared in the interview too. To me, her definition of success encapsulates creative freedom and authenticity. It’s this:
“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do,
and liking how you do it.”

It’s been a week since the interview with me on Facebook Live, and I’m already thinking that something’s missing from this definition for me. I would add one more idea to it:
Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it – knowing that you’ve mattered, that you have added something positive to people’s lives and to the world.
That’s a kind of definition that I can settle with for now, inspired by this amazing lady, Maya Angelou. But I believe that everyone should have their own definition for success. And I also believe that this definition might change over time.
