A book recommendation for the times we’re in

I’m reading a beautiful book called Man’s Search for Meaning. The classic tribute to hope from the Holocaust. The author, Viktor Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist. He survived the Holocaust. The lessons he shares in this book are especially poignant in the times we are in.

He says:

“Humour is the soul’s weapon in the fight for self-preservation.”

He describes how art and even humour were part of the concentration camp’s daily lives – as hard as it is to imagine. Humour allowed the prisoners to take a step back and rise above the situation, even if only for a few seconds.

“The attempt to develop a sense of humour and to see things in a humorous light is some kind of trick learned while mastering the art of living. Yet it is possible to practice the art of living even in a concentration camp, although suffering is omnipresent.”

I find Viktor Frankl’s perspective on life and suffering incredibly soothing and uplifting and thought I’d share this with you as a recommendation to read if this kind of stuff is of interest to you.
